KlimaHumus program presents solutions for sustainable agriculture practices and climate protection at DLG Feldtage
From June 14 to 16, 2022, the DLG Feldtage took place in Mannheim, Baden-Württemberg and opened its gates as an in-person meeting place for farmers, exhibitors, and customers. The focus of the fair was the exchange on topics such as sustainable soil management and crop production. KlimaHumus GmbH presented its future-focused program in this context.
More than 380 companies, associations, and institutions from 20 countries as well as around 15,000 visitors participated in the international open-air trade fair, which was organized by the DLG (German Agricultural Society), on the grounds of the Kirschgartshausen experimental farm near Mannheim. Some 130 international trade journalists and bloggers attended to learn about the latest developments in the agricultural sector.
KlimaHumus Program: An Innovative Solution for Enhanced Soil Fertility and Climate Action
Under the slogan “My crop production. My future.” the trade show presented a diverse and varied exhibition program that focused on modern strategies and solutions for environmentally friendly and sustainable soil management. As part of the DLG technical forums, companies provided insights into their innovations and shared their experiences. This included KlimaHumus GmbH, which was represented on site by Konstantin Pauly (see news picture at the top), Managing Director, and Felix Graf von Nesselrode, Key Account Manager. Together, the two speakers presented the KlimaHumus program, a joint venture launched by the Stiftung Lebensraum, Raiffeisen Waren-Zentrale Rhein-Main eG, and First Climate in November 2021.
Both during the forum and at the exhibition stand, Pauly and Nesselrode talked about the advantageous opportunities the program presents. For example, the program aims to increase humus build-up, improve soil health and long-term carbon storage, which is achieved through regenerative agricultural measures. Such measures can include shallow to minimal tillage, reduced fertilizer, as well as the utilization of biochar, compost tea, or microorganisms. Farmers receive intensive training as part of the program, as well as humus build-up premiums, which means the participating farmers can tap into new sources of income by re-orienting their operations toward more sustainable agriculture, thus securing the future of their farms and earnings.
The trade fair gave KlimaHumus GmbH a valuable platform, and they were pleased to have the opportunity to participate in person. “The DLG Feldtage marked another important step for our new project. It was the first major event where we were able to introduce the KlimaHumus program to a wider audience. We are encouraged by the interest and great response we received on site and hope that, in cooperation with committed farmers, we can rapidly advance sustainable development in the agricultural sector. We would like to thank RWZ for the excellent organization and execution of this event,” explained Konstantin Pauly, Managing Director of KlimaHumus GmbH. Additionally, he gave a separate presentation on the program, together with Dr. Thorsten Krämer from RWZ, during a special forum and panel discussion for interested visitors.
The KlimaHumus Program
The activities of KlimaHumus GmbH are intended to make soils more resistant to crop failure, soil loss, drought damage or flooding. Since the humus content in fertile soils in Germany has decreased significantly over the past 20 years, the program specifically promotes humus build-up. In addition, the program can make a measurable contribution to meeting the new political regulations imposed on the agricultural sector, for example by the Green Deal. These include, for example, that 25% of all agricultural land must be organically farmed by 2030 and that the use of chemical pesticides must be reduced by 50%, whereas fertilizers by at least 20%.
The KlimaHumus program measures the generated carbon sink performance based on soil analyses before and after the use of humus-enriching measures. In the medium term, the program will generate certified emission reduction certificates that can be used, for example, for the voluntary compensation of corporate greenhouse gas emissions.
