Certified Emission Reduction
The term Certified Emission Reduction refers to a type of certificate issued for successfully implemented climate protection projects in developing and emerging countries. It is an emission reduction credit where one CER corresponds to one ton of avoided carbon equivalent. These credits can be sold on the market by the project owners- for example to companies interested in making a voluntary contribution to climate action. The proceeds from the sale of the certificates support the further financing of the climate protection project.

Unter dem Begriff Certified Emission Reduction (CER) ist ein Zertifikatstyp zu verstehen, der für erfolgreich durchgeführte Klimaschutzprojekte in Entwicklungs- und Schwellenländern ausgegeben wird. Es handelt sich dabei um eine Emissionsminderungsgutschrift, bei der ein CER einer Tonne vermiedenem CO2-Äquivalent entspricht. Diese Gutschriften können von den Projekteignern am Markt verkauft werden – zum Beispiel an Unternehmen, die daran interessiert sind, einen freiwilligen Klimaschutzbeitrag zu leisten. Der Erlös aus dem Zertifikatsverkauf unterstützt die weitere Finanzierung des Klimaschutzprojektes.
Die Certified Emission Reduction basiert auf dem Clean-Development-Mechanismus, dessen Grundlagen im Kyoto-Protokoll verankert sind.
